Overview

Bathrooms built around how you move

An accessible bathroom is not one product. It is a set of decisions about the shower entry, the floor, where you can hold on, and how much room there is to turn around.

Connie starts with a walkthrough of your bathroom and a conversation about who uses it and what is hard today: stepping over a tub wall, a slick floor, a door that swings into the way, or nowhere solid to grab. The plan is built around those answers rather than a catalog package.

Some homeowners want a full accessible remodel now. Others want a few targeted changes, like a tub-to-shower conversion and grab bars, that make the room safer while they plan the rest. Both are fine, and Connie will tell you honestly which changes make the biggest difference.

What can change

Common accessible bathroom upgrades

Every bathroom is different, but these are the changes homeowners ask about most.

  • Tub-to-shower conversions that remove the step-over
  • Low-curb and roll-in showers where the floor allows it
  • Grab bars at the shower, tub and toilet, anchored into solid backing
  • Built-in shower benches and lower niches you can reach while seated
  • Slip-resistant floor tile and smaller shower-floor tile for more grip
  • Handheld shower heads and controls placed within easy reach
  • Wider, clearer floor space where the layout allows it

Planning

Getting the details right

Accessible showers live or die on slope and waterproofing. Water has to drain to the right place with a lower or no curb, so Connie plans the drain location, the slope of the floor and the waterproofing before any tile is chosen.

Grab bars are only as strong as what is behind them. During a remodel, Connie adds solid backing in the walls where bars are going now and where you may want them later, so they can be added without opening the wall again.

If you are working from ADA guidelines or a list from an occupational therapist, bring it to the estimate. Connie will walk through what fits your room and what would need bigger changes like moving plumbing or walls.

Finishes

Safe does not have to look clinical

Accessible bathrooms can look as good as any other remodel. Grab bars come in finishes that match your fixtures, shower benches can be tiled to match the walls, and slip-resistant porcelain comes in marble, stone and wood looks.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

What is a handicap accessible bathroom?

It is a bathroom planned so someone with limited mobility can use it safely: usually a low or no-curb shower, grab bars, a shower seat, slip-resistant flooring and enough clear space to move. The exact mix depends on the person and the room.

Can you make my existing bathroom accessible without a full remodel?

Often, yes. A tub-to-shower conversion with grab bars and a bench makes a big difference on its own. Connie will tell you which changes matter most for your bathroom.

Do you build to ADA guidelines?

If you want ADA guidelines followed, bring them up at the estimate. Connie will go through what your room can accommodate, such as clearances, grab bar locations and shower entry, and what would need larger changes.

Do you work outside Lakeland?

Yes. Connie is mobile and works in Lakeland, Winter Haven, Auburndale and across Polk County. Ask about Plant City and greater Tampa Bay.
